Auction Lot Details
This is an exclusive bottling for the auction of 12 Magnums of our Original Syrah. Only a single barrel of this wine is made, using grapes picked from Stonecroft’s oldest Syrah vines (the oldest producing Syrah vines in New Zealand). The total production of this wine will be around 300 bottles.
These vines include the original first row planted in 1984, which are still on their own rootstock. They are situated at Stonecroft’s original Mere Road vineyard and can be viewed on a visit to the cellar door. These Syrah vines, rescued from the Te Kauwhata research station, were the only source of Syrah in New Zealand at the time and were subsequently propagated by nurseries for commercial production.
2020 was an exceptional vintage in Hawke’s Bay and the quality level of the Syrah justified making an Original Syrah. This is only the fourth vintage in which this wine has been made.

Stonecroft is a small, family owned winery. Our focus is on the fruit quality in the vineyards, allowing the wine making to be non-interventionist and with an emphasis on making wines which cellar well. All our wines are estate grown and certified organic. We have just 7.5 hectares of vines and also make our wines on site. Most of our production is Syrah and we also make a Merlot/ Cabernet Sauvignon blend, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Zinfandel and Viognier. Over the summer months, you can visit us at our cellar door, open Fridays to Sundays.
