This year marked Tony Bish of The Urban Winery 40th vintage making exceptional Chardonnay.

We thought these were very wise words of sentiment from The Urban Winery team.

“Along with 40 years have come surprises, challenges, changes, and things unprecedented; this current time is unlike any other and yet, it's just one season. It will end. There will be another vintage next year and the year after.
People will come together again.
Hands will collect the fruits of their labour.
We're here with you. We'll be here when this season is over and we'll work to rebuild. Together. “

Great imagery from Richard Brimer. This year marked Tony's 40th vintage.
40 times the seasons have changed.
For 40 years, people have come together, hands have worked hard to collect the fruit, ferment the wine, and build the Hawkes Bay industry we're so proud of.

Congratulations Rod McDonald of Te Awanga Estate for being named on - The Master Winemaker 100 list! We'd have to agree this is a much deserved nomination being the amazing winemaker you are! We hope you’ve kept some of the Trademark 2016 Syrah for yourself and that you’e celebrating with one... or some! This guy.
He’s unlikely to tell you so I’m gonna!

Rod has just been named on a who's who list of top global winemakers - The Master Winemaker 100 - as compiled by reputable magazine The Drinks Business (UK).

Not only that but for him to even be considered for The Master Winemaker 100 list, he first had to win a Master award at The Global Masters 2019 international blind-tasting series…which he did late last year for the Trademark 2016 Syrah (sorry we didn't tell you!). A Master award is one tier above a Gold award in this series of tastings judged only by Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers.

So the mighty Trademark Syrah has done it again. Placing little old Te Awanga Estate, and all the wonderful people who work so hard here, onto the international stage.

Rod says he’s blown away to be listed alongside winemakers from such wineries as Chapoutier, Penfolds, Bird in Hand, Vasse Felix and Charles Heidsieck Champagne.

“Releasing the Trademark to the world is a little like poking a stick in the ground and saying that this is the best we can create at that particular time, at this particular place. It’s thoroughly rewarding for everyone who helped make this wine to be recognised in this manner.”

Congrats also to the other NZ winemakers on the list: Craggy Range Winery Te Pā Wines Babich Wines, Greywacke and Marisco. Six from NZ...bravo 👏

Our stocks of Trademark 2016 Syrah are very low. If you have already managed to nab some, enjoy, and thank you. And if you happen upon some at your local wine retailer...grab it!
