30 litres / 40 bottles
Auction Lot Details
First made in 1982, Te Mata Awatea continues to represent the best of the classic Hawke’s Bay Cabernet Merlot blend. Floral aromas with intense blackberry, currant and dark plum flavours lead to a rich, supple palate with layers of brightness, persistence and appeal.
Awatea is a key wine at Te Mata Estate and takes its name from the historic ship SS Awatea (meaning “Eye of the Dawn”) that sailed the Auckland – Sydney – Wellington route in the late 1930s. The Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport in WWII and was sunk off Algeria in 1942.
This is a truly unique, never before offered vertical of Awatea (1982–2022, excluding 1984 when the wine was not made).
